Municipal Solid Waste

Introduction:-
One of the major problems being faced by cities and towns relate to management of municipal solid waste (MSW). Due to growing population, not only in the urban areas but also in rural areas, the environmental problem arising from unscientific and indiscriminate disposal of municipal garbage is a real menace for the whole society.
Municipal solid waste (MSW), also called Urban Solid Waste, and is a waste type that includes predominantly household waste (domestic waste) with sometimes the addition of commercial wastes, construction and demolition debris, sanitation residue, and waste from streets collected by a municipality within a given area. They are in either solid or semisolid form  and generally exclude industrial hazardous wastes but including treated bio-medical wastes(MSW Rules 2000)
MSW is term usually applied to heterogeneous collection of wastes produced in urban areas, the nature of which varies from region to region. The characteristics and quantity of the solid waste generated in a region is not only a function of the living standard and life style of the region’s inhabitants, but also of the abundance and type of the region’s natural resources. Urban wastes can be subdivided into two major components:- Organic and Inorganic
